Refinement and uniform dispersion of the free machining elements within matrix is always desirable for aluminium billets produced by direct chill (DC) casting. The conventional grain refiner addition cannot ensure uniformity microstructure homogeneous distribution insoluble or intermetallic phases. Melt conditioned direct-chill (MC-DC) casting a key technology producing refinement secondary This physical approach combines vertical with high shear device directly immersed in sump situ microstructural control. Increased heat extraction rate due to forced convection, larger temperature gradient at solidification front shallower contribute fine equiaxed dendritic grains arm spacing that favor second phase particles as-cast billet. trend features was preserved even after thermomechanical downstream processing, giving rise much improved machinability extruded solid bars.
